The Spartans and Wolverines traded goals and the game went into half time with the Wolverines leading 9-5. Frustrated, but confident in their play Michigan Sate felt they missed some opportunities to bring the game closer that what the half-time score was, “We had our chances in the second, you can’t throw the ball away in a game as big as this and that’s exactly what we did. When you play a team as good as Michigan you have to take advantage of all opportunities,” senior Captain Brian Kegley recalls the second quarter of play. In the second half, the game began to slip away from the Spartans as the Wolverine attack began to take advantage of the overworked Michigan State defense. Freshman defender Wes Binder experienced firsthand the pressure put on the Spartan defense by the Michigan attack, “They had so much more possession time than us in the second half and we began to break down defensively.” Penalties seemed to only add to the Spartan’s troubles as Michigan State surrendered 12 goals in the second. Despite the turnout, a 21-9 triumph in favor of the Wolverines, the Spartans feel confident about their upcoming CCLA tournament chances and a potential rematch with the No. 1 ranked University of Michigan; Steve Schimpke says his team has what it takes to rebound, “We had our moments, and that’s what we’ll take into practice this week. If we play our best and Michigan plays their best we should meet again very soon and we will be ready.” |
