Providing Growth for the Future Team seeks future growth of program, starts first endowment fund in history June 21, 2009 East Lansing, MI – On May 7, 2009, the Men’s Lacrosse team launched the first ever endowment fund in Michigan State University club sport history. The initial gift of $30,000 is a result of team fundraising, cost-saving alternatives and various other financial management practices that have occurred over the past few years. In addition, the team has shown exceptional leadership and vision that will enable a permanent source of income and support for the program. The team’s endowment will be invested in the University’s endowment fund, which started in 1916 with an initial gift of $100,000 and was valued at $1.28 billion in June 2008. The performance and rapid increase of the University’s endowment has contributed to improving outdated facilities, higher quality of education and living as well as research. “This is a huge step in the right direction for the program and will provide unlimited opportunities for the team,” graduated Senior and Founder of the endowment Brody Eagelston comments, “The impact could be tremendous.” |

Spartans Suffer Disappointing Loss to Michigan in Regular Season Finale: Focus Attention Towards CCLA Tournament
April 30, 2009 By Steve Schimpke Birmingham, MI. – Storms swirled across southeastern Michigan as the state’s two premier programs faced off at Seaholm high school for the Great Lakes Lacrosse Classic. Emotions and nerves ran high for each team as thunder and lightning sent both squads back into the locker rooms before the completion of warm-ups, pushing the scheduled 7:00pm start time back to nearly 8 o’clock. With the weather cleared, and the remaining fans back in their rain-soaked seats, the Spartans and Wolverines took the field again. The Spartan’s set the tone early gaining possession of the opening face-off, and after both teams missed early scoring chances, sophomore midfielder David Reese found Senior attackman Joe Stephanoff on the crease for the game’s first goal. Michigan State’s quick start faded quickly as the rain began to fall hard and the Wolverines ramped up their attack. With Sophomore Trevor Yealy leading the Wolverines they fought their way to a 6-1 lead early in the second quarter before the sky lit up once again and teams and fans were forced back inside. “We were down in our locker room, but we could all still hear the thunder and there was a lot of speculation about whether we were going to be able to actually finish the game,” Senior Captain Steve Schimpke recalls the uncertainty of the whole situation. “We couldn’t spend time thinking about that though, Coach made sure we were staying loose and focused and were ready to play when the weather cleared up.” Ready to play was exactly what the Spartans were when at 10 o’clock they were told the weather was going let up and the game would continue. Sophomore Brian Conway commented on the chance to finish the game that night, “I felt really good, you know, I just wanted to get back out there and play lacrosse, that’s what I do and I know we were ready to score some goals.” Michigan State appeared to have their swagger back as Stephanoff netted his second goal of the game from Sophomore Pat Nemes before Connor Bush found his way into the score book with a man-advantage goal from freshman midfielder Mike Degenhardt. |
